Happy Easter. He is risen. Highrock Covenant Church and I partnered to create this piece. Hope you enjoy.
This piece was birthed out of the song by Kari Jobe, The Garden. Shin draws with iconographic and narrative imagery. The story starts left to right.
As we remember the death of Jesus on the cross and resurrection, we are all invited to new life. Jesus defeated death and sin, and he extends a communal invitation to the new garden. On the left, a multi-ethnic and diverse of people yearn for more in the midst of suffering and pain, a reference to Revelation 7:9: “Behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb.”
The understanding of the New Eden is reference to “a new heaven and a new earth”. This new garden is a place where Jesus will ultimately call his people to reside. They look forward to this as they live in the reality that is not yet here fully. In Revelation, Jesus promises, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” This is why the multitude bear both tears as well as faint smiles anticipating that day. The scarred hands of Jesus in the center welcome us into this picture. Shifting our gaze to the right moves us beyond the garden, where Jesus invites us into this new land and the Holy City, the new Jerusalem.
